Just listened to the Eyes from the first show I dragged my future wife to. Gotta say I enjoyed it then and still enjoy it now. The places Jerry could still could take you to every once and a while with those MIDI effects was pretty cool. Guess that is why we kept going back time after time in '93 to '95, hoping for just a sliver of the old magic. So, any opinions on the MIDI?
Not a bad Eyes with a nice Flute sounding solo. Vince actually fills in with some nice piano. Yea, I know its '93, but even a blind pig can find a acorn sometimes.

like Finster - sometimes I liked it, sometimes not. my main gripe with the mide was Jerry's habit of changing the "effect" to often within one song/jam. a couple of birdsongs come to mind the the rapid change was more jarring than "cool." he never struck me as having much "fluidity" in using various midi effects - seemed to be more of a toy for him to play with than an instrument enhancement with which to make art.

That is kind of my feeling too Dire. You just articulated it much better than I did.
It seems to me he played with the MIDI alot more than he did with any of his other effects. Maybe not, but it seemed that way to me. Maybe the MIDI was more noticible so it seemed like he played with it alot more.

What's this... You're actually commenting on a Grateful Dead topic that doesn't involve 9/18/87. Wow!

though I must admit that I listened to the Dew from that show the last three nights before bedtime. maybe i have some subconscious desire to precipitate an apocalyptic nightmare so I can jar myself out of a sound sleep at 3am and go play more Black Ops

:)

This explains those "mooo-ving", sad emails from Bessie about how you never have time for her anymore.

What's a bovine to do? Do they have a cloven hoof platform for interested parties? Anything to get back in your life, apparently...

since i don't listen to much post '83 anyway, i can't really judge too strongly here, but i'd say i'm in the sometimes yay, mostly nay category as well.

my feelings are similar to what others have said; to me it just makes their jamming so cluttered most of the time. there's no organic movement, no flow. there were moments when it truly worked, though.

My opinion is that it worked really well for the space segments of the show, not so much on the structured songs. I think Garcia had enough effects and range of instrument to not even need MIDI, but we all know how the band liked to experiment. Is it true that they were some of the first musicians to play around with this technology? This could explain his fumbling around trying to find the right "instrument." If you ask me, it just takes away from the rock n roll...

occasionally yea, mostly nay.

I personally think Jerry got a little too carried away with the MIDI usage. It was cool once in a while, but he relied on it too much sometimes. I liked Jerry as a guitar player, not so much as a trumpet / flute / whatever player.

jmb1 - exactly! Garcia played with a trumpet player's phrasing, not just sound. Unsurprisingly Lesh did too.
There's an Iko Iko (can't remember which) where they sound just like a New Orleans band.

Never liked it...Ever.
The beginning of the end in a way, next came in ear monitors, and everything went to shit (in my opinion)
Love early 80's space though, when it was just Jerry and Bob and their analog toys, It just seemed more pure to me.

What's "MIDI"?

Animal, vegetable, or mineral?

"Massively Invasive Digitalage Intrusion"?

;)

PS: in all seriousness, I was here for a number of months before I caught on to what folks were talking about...I assume he didn't use it prior to 82? Or did I just not notice?

Assuming you're talking intrusion into the music, yes, I think that's what it stands for!

"Massively Invasive Digitalage Intrusion"?

I'll take 2, one of Rose Quartz and one of Platinum. That veggie and animal stuff is just too primal for this Digitalage baby.

Bessie, on the other hand, told me she will take whatever she can get these days.

MIDI- musical instrument digital interface.
Basically made his guitar somewhat like a syntheziser.
First appered in '89, I believe. Used extensively in the '90s.

Got to come down on the negative side. I'm one of those boring old farts who likes a guitar to sound like a guitar and not like a trombone, or whatever.

Big neah from me. I don't hate it but why would I want to listen to Garcia making various odd noises rather than hear him play guitar?

rarely listen to post '90 so it is a moot point with me.
